Hi,I'm a newbie to time shares.  I have just joined TUG and this vacation point exchange.  I am looking forward to using your board to find out about Trust points.  We just spent time at the Maui Ocean Club and found it to be a wonderful vacation venue.  I am a beginner in the time share area.  Are there places to go to find out about how to use our points to get the most vacation for the dollar?  We are newly retired and we are open to different locations.  Is it most cost effective to use our points at MVC or on the other options such as explorer vacations or cruises.  We also received an interval international book.  Are these good choices?  I look forward to the posts on this site.  Thank you in advance for your insights!Pam

Pam8833:You are off to a good start joining here and on TUG.  Between what you will learn here, as well as on the Marriott Resort System threads on TUG, signing up on my-vacationclub.com is an obvious must.  At my-vacationclub.com you will find online tutorials, as well as the option to chat with Vacation Ownership Advisors who can help answer questions too.  That said, if ever in doubt when told something by a VOA that you are unsure of its correctness, don't hesitate to post a question here or on TUG as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience in both of those groups.  As for your "use" questions... so far, I have only used my DC points for booking within the Marriott Vacation Club system, and so far, that has been a great experience.  I like the ability to book today, and know that the reservation is confirmed immediately rather than having to wait for exchanges to come through as was the case before the points system kicked in (unless you had a dedicated week somewhere).  I have read several posts on TUG and elsewhere that make the cruises sound like not the best option for utilizing points.  Not sure about the other explorer vacations.  As for the II system, I believe using that would be very similar to what the system was like prior to the points system, and really opens up your available locations and resorts, but again, I have not experienced that through the DC yet, but have experienced II exchanges on occasion in the past, via my in-laws, and never had a bad experience doing that either.  That said, many non-Marriott resorts are often a notch or so below the Marriott resorts IMO.  Good luck and happy traveling!!

Fasttr:Thanks for the information about how to get info on Marriott VC Points.  I will start to view the online tutorials.  I didn't know that there were advisors online so that is another avenue I can use.  It is a very good point you brought up about checking what the VOA tells you.  I see from reading the board that ask and check twice is a good rule. So, from the second part of your post I think I understand that with the MVC points you can get a confirmed reservation right away.  But not so wth Interval.  Can you combine the new Trust points and the points that are from deed owners who have bought or changed their ownership into points?  I have to investigate if turning my MVC points into Marriott reward points is beneficial, as I would have to do that by Oct. I think two of my options might be to bank my points or turn them into Marriott reward points.  Does anyone have any thoughts on these options? Slowly moving up the learning curve!

You can do almost anything via the my-vacationclub.com site.  Look at availability, book reservations, bank points, borrow points, etc, etc.  They also have the ability to call in, but I rarely ever do that as I find the online booking system so easy.As for the II reservations, again, I am no expert on those, but it is my understanding you would need to put in a request for a few potential resorts and weeks you were interested in, and assuming there was no immediately available weeks with the resort/date combo you are looking for (which I believe is rare), you wait until a possible exchange comes through.  Sometimes the wait can be months.  I like to book and know immediately, so I can get on with booking flights, etc.  Regarding combining Trust points and Legacy points, yes, those can be combined.  In most instances, you will find no issues, but people have seemed to experience an occasional issue in the 13 month window where a select group of reservation can only be booked with Trust points.  Then at 12 months, many of those seem to get deposited into the Exchange Company for any and all points to get them.  At least that's the present consensus on how it works.  As for converting DC points into MR points, most will tell you that is not the best use of them.  I believe the conversion is 1 Trust Point = 32 MR points, so in doing the math, it does not seem like a good value IMO.Banking of your points can easily be done online or by calling a VOA...assuming you are within the window of time to still be able to do it (before 6 months after the beginning of your use year).Alternatively, you can always rent your points here at VacationPointExchange.Hope that info helps.

Pam,Welcome to VPE and welcome to the Marriott system.  Since you've found TUG and VPE, I think you've two solid sources of information -- and Fasttr has already given you some excellent feedback. The best use of your points (in my opinion) will be to use them within the Marriott Destinations Club system.  That is what they are designed for, and where they are "most powerful".  When you get into Interval International or trading for MRPs, you lose some of the features that make Marriott points valuable.Fundamentally, Marriott points allow you to make a reservation anywhere in the system (subject to availability), in your exact room size, view and check-in date.  Other timeshare systems have different advantages and disadvantages, but Marriott has structured an attractive usage system.Marriott points have value -- your Trust Points can be rented easily to third parties, and a general range would be $0.50 - $0.65 per point.  So if you have extra points, you can rent those to a third party, or if you are short points, you can rent them from a third party. You will maximize your Marriott points by traveling "off-season", as Marriott will require less points for the reservation if you are traveling in a less demanded season.  As an example, a 1BR Ocean View in Aruba is 1,775 points if you can travel in October (still great weather) versus 2,975 for that same room in February -- because of the difference in traveler demand.Marriott understands the supply/demand really well and makes point requirements high for their best units -- a 2BR Ocean Front unit in the new towers in Maui is 8,650 points -- that's a lot of points.  Points users will study the charts looking for "opportunities" -- such as 5-day reservations from Sunday - Thursday, which are often at a lower requirements.  In the example above, the 5 night reservation is 5,500 points, and then adding Fri/Saturday for Maui is the additional 3,150 points.  Marriott point users will quickly determine what is important -- View?  Day 6 and 7? New buildings versus established properties?  There is a lot to learn, but it has been (mostly) fun for those of us who have invested the time and love these crazy things. Thanks again and welcome to VPE!Best,Greg

Thanks Everyone!I have been learning a lot from all of you.  The answers from Fasttr and Greg have been so helpful.  I purchased 3500 points in July.  I am looking to book a vacation for my husband and myself with our two children and their families.  That would be 8 people.  If I am understanding correctly, I would need to bank my points within 6 months of the closing so that I would have 7000 points in order to have 3 bedrooms at most vacation club locations.  Then I would be able to use the 7000 points in 2014???  We live in NY and would appreciate some guidance as to which vacation clubs would be good o take our 5 & 7 year old grandchildren to.  Should I be posting in another area now?

Pam:If you purchased in July or so, I would assume your use year will start around Sept or so.  Lets assume 9/1/13 - 8/31/14 will be your initial use year.  The initial block of points will be useable within that window.  If your intended 2014 trip you mentioned above would fall in that window of time, no worries, you can "borrow" points from your 9/1/14-8/31/15 use year and then have up to 7000 points to use...say next summer.  You don't need to borrow the entire year's worth of points, the system will allow you to just borrow what you need.  Or, alternatively, you can rent some points here if you are short and don't want to dip into the following year.  If your planned trip was in 2014 but after the end of your 9/1/13-8/31/14 use year (or in 2015), then yes, you can do exactly as you stated above.  I just wanted to point that out as your use year will not be calendar based (assuming all you own is Trust points and are not also an enrolled owner who had enrolled your weeks).  As for potential desitnations, you can post here, but I would also recommend posting your question on TUG (http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29) as on TUG, you will get lots and lots of quick "opinions". Hope that helps.

Right now I am not sure of when we will take our trip.  I will be sure to remember the dates you have discussed.  You are right that my dates are from 9/1/13 – 8/31/14.  I have to bank my points by 2/28/14.  It seems like may owners book their vacations very far in advance.  I don't know if I will be able to do that.  I see that you can exchange, but how do you exchange points?  Or can you?

Your best bet is to read this Marriott points system FAQ at TUG.  It will answer a lot of your immediate questions.  http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197346As for the timing of booking your vacations, the farther out you can book, the more availability there will be.  There will be more available at 12 months out than there will be a 2 months out.  That said, it varies greatly by resort and time of year.  That said, in a recent newsletter from the Marriott Vacation Club Trust Owners Association, most reservations are being placed between 1 and 3 months out, so all hope is not lost if you can't plan a year ahead.
