I am looking at converting my external week into the Destinations program. Marriott is currently running a special until 9/7/16 to do this. I will not buy points – just convert my week. I plan on renting points to use the destinations program. I will continue to trade my week with II (most years) because this seems to be the best value. Since I will be at the lowest level in the program I am concerned about availability if I convert. I feel I will have to look at going to the nice resorts during low season and shoulder season. Any feedback on availability would be appreciated. Would it be better not to join the Destinations program and have VacationPointExchange members book the full reservation for me? If I do this what is the premium I should expect to pay as opposed to renting points. Conversion cost for my external week is $1495 ($595 for and internal week). My week will be worth 1975 points. It is difficult to put value on converting because it is difficult to understand availability from the outside looking in. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Would your usage of the DC points system generally be weeklong reservations, or something less than a week.  The reason I ask is that by being at the lowest ownership level, you can still book full week (or longer) reservations 12 months from check in, and oddly enough, I have found that not all inventory is even made available at the 13 month mark for higher level owners to even book.  Some inventory may be made available sometime between the 13 and 12 month mark for higher owners to book, but the vast majority of eligible DC inventory is made available at the 12 month mark, so you should be ok, even for prime weeks at prime locations as long as you were prepared and were booking right as the 12 month window opens up.On the other hand, if you are looking to use the DC primarily for shorter stays (less than 7 nights), then as a lower level owner, you could only book those at 10 months out, where higher levels can book those at 13 months out.  That is where you may find a challenge as things could be picked over by 10 months out.Another option to consider is MVC seems to be pretty consistent allowing enrollment of a pre June 2010 purchased week (resale or developer does not matter) with the purchase of an Encore package as part of a presentation at a MVC resort.  Do you have any upcoming stays at a resort where you could attend a presentation and purchase the Encore package they offer you at the end (for a 4-6 night return trip and a second presentation).  Usually for $1200 or so, you get the return trip, get some Marriott Reward points, and if you bring it up, they will also enroll your unenrolled week for free.  Might be worth pondering as an option.  Not sure, but you may even be able to do it that way by just calling them up and purchasing an Encore package without being on site.  Good luck with your decision.

I was not aware of the Encore Package offers during the tours. I am going to Grande Ocean first of October. I would prefer the Encore Package you described to the discount that is currently in place. I may hold off and see if the Encore Package will be offered during my visit. It is good to hear that I will be competitive for week long stays. Thank you for the information. If anyone has experience with the Encore Package I would love to hear about it.

Here is a thread that started in 2015 over on the TUG Marriott board on the Encore package enrollment option which has several 2016 posts to it later in the thread. There are several other threads on the topic, but this one had a lot of good info in it. http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227576

Fasttr,  Thanks for the link and the advice. After reviewing the information on the link and other TUG links I took your advice and emailed a salesperson in Hilton Head. They emailed me an offer by noon. I called the office and tried to get a better deal without any luck. I ended up taking their Encore offer and saved about $300 off the Marriott discount that ends 9/7/16. They threw in incentives that are a good fit for me. 65000 Marriott rewards points and 4 nights in Hilton Head. This is not the best deal I saw reviewed on TUG – but not the worst either. Thanks again Fasttr and the people who helped me offline look at availability in the program.
