No real downside the way MVC is currently treating them, as long as you pay the “junk fees” to MVC to open up the points to unrestricted access. The junk fees amount to basically $2 per point. So if you are buying them from another owner for… say $5 per point (I used that number as there have been several reports of MVC triggering ROFR in the mid $4/point range), and after paying MVC their $2 per point, you are into the points for $7 per point plus closing costs. As long as you understand that, the points should be treated just like any other points. If you don't pay the junk fees, your points can only be used to book inventory within 60 days of check in. One caveat worth mentioning, some have interpreted the documents to allow MVC the ability to restrict usage of resale purchased trust points from booking things in the Explorer collection, and also perhaps from exchanging them for Marriott Reward (hotel) points. So far, they don't appear to be adding these restriction on resale points, but some would argue that in the future, they likely could if they wanted to. Figured that was worth pointing out.
